Online resources are available to anyone with an internet connection and do not require any login credentials to access. General online sources must always be carefully vetted to verify appropriateness for use in a project (see the Academic Integrity and CRAP Test Guides for details).
Atlapedia Online contains full color physical maps, political maps as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world.
The Columbia Gazetteer of the World

The U.S. Gazetteer Files provide a listing of all geographic areas for selected geographic area types.
Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature
Planetary nomenclature, like terrestrial nomenclature, is used to uniquely identify a feature on the surface of a planet or satellite so that the feature can be easily located, described, and discussed. This gazetteer contains detailed information about all names of topographic and albedo features on planets and satellites (and some planetary ring and ring-gap systems) that the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named and approved from its founding in 1919 through the present time.
The Texas GeoData portal has been developed with a mix of open source solutions and commercial off-the-shelf technology, including GeoBlacklight 2.0.0 for the front end framework, ArcGIS Server, PostgreSQL, and Apache Solr.
